Ian Baucom is the author, most recently, of Specters of the Atlantic: Finance Capital, Slavery, and the Philosophy of History, which traces the history and destiny of modernity through an extended study of the Zong massacre of 1781, when the captain of the Liverpool slave ship Zong ordered 133 slaves thrown overboard to enable the ships owners to file an insurance claim for lost cargo. Professor Baucom is also the author of Out of Place: Englishness, Empire and the Locations of Identity and co-editor of Shades of Black: Assembling Black Arts in 1980s Britain. He has edited special issues of the South Atlantic Quarterly on Atlantic Studies and Romanticism, and he is now working on a book entitled The Disasters of War: On Inimical Life. Ian Baucom is Professor of English and Director of the Franklin Humanities Institute, Duke University.
